Cedar Rapids Xavier begins its quest for a fourth consecutive girls’ Class 1A state soccer championship Tuesday.
The Saints (11-4) host the winner of Monday’s match between Benton Community and Clear Creek Amana at 5 p.m.
Xavier has won the last three 1A crowns and four of the last five. To get back to Muscatine, the Saints probably will have to get past No. 5 Solon in the regional finals next Monday. The Lady Spartans open Tuesday against the winner of Monday’s match between Mount Vernon and Iowa City Regina.
The area’s other ranked team, No. 4 Union takes a 16-0 mark into Tuesday’s match against Cono Christian or Independence.
Class 2A regionals also kick off Tuesday, with most of the heavyweights earning first-round byes and a night off until Wednesday. Top-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy (13-0) opens Wednesday against either Waterloo East or Waterloo West.
Kennedy was the state runner-up to West Des Moines Valley in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
No. 6 Cedar Rapids Washington resides in the same region as the Cougars, and likely would face them in a regional final next Monday. Washington opens at home Wednesday against Mason City or Cedar Falls.
