What was a flock of fledglings before the boys’ soccer season started two months ago has taken flight. The Hawks are soaring.
Unranked Cedar Rapids Prairie knocked off No. 1 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 3-1, in a Class 3A substate semifinal Thursday at Kennedy. The Hawks’ reward is a date with No. 2 Iowa City West in a 6:30 p.m. substate final Monday at Kennedy. The winner advances to the state tournament June 4-6 at Runnells and Urbandale.

While the first-day leaders were scoring higher Saturday, Decorah junior Andrew Peter went lower and won the Class 3A medalist competition in the boys’ state golf tournament at Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes.
Peter shot a 71 after an opening-day 81 and won the title with 152 strokes, one shot better than Independence senior Jake Thomas (73-80—153) in second. Peter’s 71 was the best round of the day by five shots.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Charlie Caris said he felt like a marked man at the Class 2A boys’ state tennis tournament. But instead of walking around with a target on his back, the Des Moines Roosevelt senior took aim at the record books and scored a bull’s-eye.
