CEDAR RAPIDS — Nick Mozena wasn’t in the mood for sympathy.
Not with the semifinals in sight.
Mozena, a senior from Dubuque Senior, blew a 5-2 second-set lead in the quarterfinals, then outlasted a cramp-wracked Joey White of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, in Friday’s biggest upset at the Class 2A boys’ tennis tournament at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center.
White had defeated Mozena twice in the regular season and was seeded second.

Solon and Washington (Iowa) are second in their respective classes after the first day of state golf tournament action.
Solon, playing in Class 2A at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora, is five shots back of Carroll Kuemper after 18 holes. Blake Bruene shot a 78 to pace the Spartans, who totaled 331 strokes Friday. Bruene is tied for fourth, and teammate Kyler Stahle is tied for eighth with an 81.
In Class 3A at the Harvester Golf Club in Rhoades, Washington totaled 320 strokes to trail Spencer by just one shot.

Nashua-Plainfield’s bats struggled to find much offense in Tuesday’s season opening loss to Waverly-Shell Rock.
The Huskies, though, made amends quite nicely Thursday in the Corn Bowl Conference opener with Northwood-Kensett.
Nashua-Plainfield pounded out 10 hits, along with taking advantage of several Northwood-Kensett errors in a 12-0 three inning win.
Alicia Martin’s one-out single in the third drove in Chelsey Wedeking and capped an eight-run inning.
"That was an awesome turnaround," said Nashua-Plainfield coach Karleen Retterath. "That gives our kids great confidence heading into tomorrow."
