CORALVILLE — It wasn’t a surprise that second-ranked Iowa City West scored three goals on No. 4 Cedar Rapids Washington. After all, the Trojans did that in the teams’ regular-season game.
But Thursday at Northwest Junior High School, West drilled its first two goals off corner kicks, which surprised the Trojans (15-2) as much as it deflated the Warriors (15-4). If district scores mean anything, the Class 3A boys’ state golf tournament is anybody’s race.
Seven of the eight teams qualified with scores within 13 strokes of each other.
Washington (Iowa) was fourth last year, and the Demons’ district tally of 303 is best among the qualifiers.
The 3A tournament is at The Harvester Golf Club, Rhodes. The 2A competition is at Lake Panorama National Resort, Panorama, while the 1A event is at Spring Valley Golf Course, Livermore. Tee time is noon Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.

Three defending state champions are ranked No. 1 in the preseason softball rankings, released Wednesday at the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
West Des Moines Valley (40-5 in 2008) is the top team in Class 4A, while Winterset (41-4) and North Polk (40-4) head the lists in 3A and 2A, respectively.
Martensdale-St. Marys (33-6), the 1A runner-up last year, leads the 1A list. Defending champion Newell-Fonda is No. 4.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Clear Creek Amana lead the area hopefuls.
Jefferson (32-11) is No. 2 in 4A. The J-Hawks finished third last year. …

There were more birds than ballplayers at Lou Koenigsfeld Field on Wednesday.
Charles City baseball’s scheduled home opener with Cedar Falls was postponed due to unplayable conditions at Sportsmen’s Park.
The Comets will take on Cedar Falls at 4 p.m. Friday as part of the Louie K Classic. The winner of that matchup will face the winner of Clear Lake and Mason City Newman for the championship later that night.
