DES MOINES — Sara Stoakes’ goose-bump moment came on an 80-degree day.
One of the most versatile track athletes in state history, Stoakes wrapped up a brilliant career with two more girls’ Class 1A state championships at Drake Stadium.
She finished her career with 12 titles, including four this year. She accounted for all of North Tama’s 40 points, which was enough to give her school the 1A team title, its fourth in a row.
As she came down the home stretch with a safe lead in the 1,500, the …

DES MOINES — Keenan Davis wrapped himself with the championship flag. He couldn’t help himself, it was there sitting there waiting for him.
Davis, a senior, gathered his Cedar Rapids Washington teammates together moments before the Warriors accepted the ultimate team goal in track: the state championship trophy. Washington’s athletes jumped up and down chanting, “We won state, we won state.”
Yes, they did. Washington became the first Cedar Rapids metro school to claim the Class 4A state title since 1977. Washington, which won state titles in 1975 and …

Lewis got out of the block a little slowly …
