DES MOINES — Mid-Prairie junior Tanner Miller crossed the finish line concurrently with competitor Matt Finn of Hudson on Friday afternoon in the Class 2A 400-meter hurdles finals.
Each were timed at 53.07. Both stopped for about 30 seconds before it was announced Miller had won the race by five one-thousandths of a second to claim the state title at Drake Stadium. It was mentioned to Miller following the race that few people have seen a race that tight.

DES MOINES — Marion senior Drew Clark’s only competition tonight was against himself.
And he still won.
Clark destroyed the shot put field with every throw at the Class 3A state meet. But it was his second toss that vaulted him from state champion to state legend.
Clark heaved the shot 64 feet, 7 3/4 inches, nearly two feet farther than the 32-year-old Class 3A record. It was the fourth-best throw in state history and the 11th-best throw nationally this year.

DES MOINES — Chest bumps and high-fives are nothing new for Cedar Rapids Washington’s relay teams this year.
But this morning’s 4×200-meter relay brought poses and multiple jumps from Washington’s foursome. The Warriors scorched their competitors to win the event in 1 minutes, 27.64 seconds, the 11th-best time in state history.
Washington stayed in tight competition with West Des Moines Valley and Cedar Rapids Kennedy throughout the race. Then anchor Alex Carr sizzled down the stretch in the final 100 meters to give Washington its second consecutive state crown in the event.

DES MOINES — Postville junior Austin Hangartner finished fourth in the discus Friday morning at the Class 1A state track meet at Drake Stadium.
Hangartner qualified for the finals with a launch of 149 feet, 1 inch, fourth-best entering the finals. The throw held up to keep him in fourth.

“That was one of my farthest this year,” Hangartner said. “It wasn’t quite my personal best, but it was still a good throw. I’m happy with how I did.”

DES MOINES — It’s still a deficit. But it seems a little more manageable.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon won the distance medley relay, finished second in two events and crept closer to Dubuque Wahlert in the Class 3A girls’ standings at the state track meet Friday at Drake Stadium.

DES MOINES — It was a slow day for area Class 2A girls at the state track meet.
The highlight was a third-place finish from Jesup’s Tessa Westpfahl in the 400-meter hurdles. She was timed in 1:05.34. Alex Gochenour of Logan-Magnolia won it at 1:03.71.

DES MOINES — Little Sis has a championship of her own.
Micaela Haight of Iowa City West dominated the girls’ Class 4A shot put at the state track meet Friday at Drake Stadium. She was regularly over 42 feet, highlighted by a best throw of 44-6 1/4.

DES MOINES — The first time Sara Stoakes tinkered with hurdling, she did so without her coach’s permission.
“(Coach Kent Hanser) wasn’t very happy about it,” Stoakes said. “He didn’t want me to get hurt.”

Charles City’s Sarah Eggena has one simple goal in mind for this weekend’s state track and field championships — finishing higher than she has the past two years.
