MARION — They didn’t win the meet, but the girls from Mount Vernon-Lisbon put themselves in a position to win the next one.
The one that matters.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon won nine events, but Dubuque Wahlert parlayed overall strength into a championship in last night’s Class 3A girls’ track regional at Thomas Park Field.

IOWA CITY — Alonzo Markham and Kevin Dibbern have competed against each other for six years.
The latest installment produced a photo-finish in the 400 meters and a more defined result in the 200 Saturday in a Class 4A district meet at Iowa City West. Iowa City High’s Dibbern edged Markham in the 400 by .012 seconds, but Iowa City West’s Markham beat Dibbern in the 200.
It took at least two minutes to confirm a winner in the 400. At the finish line, reporters asked them who’d won the race. Dibbern …

Thirteen young women comprise the entire Oriole girls track roster.
Those 13 young women went to the District/Regional meet in Brooklyn on May 15th, and came home with 13 scored events. 
Six with State qualifying gold medals.

Small wonder then, that Coach Abby has taken to calling them her “Lucky 13″.
