CEDAR RAPIDS — The high school girls soccer rankings came out Thursday, the same day Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Cedar Rapids Xavier were scheduled to meet. For Thursday, at least, they were both number one.

Kennedy, top-ranked in Class 2A, no doubt earned the right to stay there with a 3-1 victory at Xavier.
Kennedy is coming off a runner-up finish in Class 2A last season. Xavier has won three straight Class 1A championships and entered Thursday’s game at 3-0. The teams have been cultivating an intense rivalry.

Marion’s Drew Clark successfully defended his shot put title at the Drake Relays Thursday. He did so convincingly, with a heave of 61 feet, 1 inch.

DES MOINES – Majesty Tutson found her focus. Jessica Gehrke was a drama queen.
Both are Drake Relays champions.
Tutson and Gehrke made the first day of the Drake Relays a field day for the girls from Iowa City, winning titles in the discus and long jump, respectively.
 
Gehrke earned her crown on the final jump, overtaking Davenport Central’s Alexis Mitchell with a leap of 18 feet, 11 inches. The clutch effort came moments after Mitchell had wrested the lead from Gehrke at 18-6 3/4.
