Friends of North Cedar’s Ashley Himes nominated her for the KCRG Athlete of the Week following her death of cancer Monday. KCRG made her an honorary winner.
The station was flooded “by literally hundreds of nominations,” according to sports director John Campbell.
Himes, 17, was an all-conference softball player and held the school record in the discus.

Anamosa Junior Kayla Sanborn recently broke a 25 year old school record in the long Jump. Kayla jumped 17′2″ to break the record of 17 feet and qualify for the Drake Relays. Sanborn also holds the schools Cross County record.

A source who is familiar with Iowa State University athletics left a voicemail at The Gazette’s sports offices, saying ISU Coach Cael Sanderson is on the Penn State campus. Rumors have surfaced he’s interviewed for the head coaching job, opened when Troy Sunderland recently resigned.
Sanderson’s voicemail was full and a callback number sent to his pager and text messages were not immediately returned.
