Four weeks after I posted next year’s girls’ basketball preseason rankings, I’m giving equal time for the boys.

Again, the rankings are loosely based on mathematics — (2008-09 W-L pct. ) x (pct. returning ppg) — with a little fudging based on tradition. For instance, Linn-Mar, Western Christian, Pella Christian and others get a little bit of a break.

Some thoughts:

Where will Ames be ranked in the national preseason polls? The Little Cyclones have to be somewhere in the top 25, don’t they?

The deepest class is 1A, especially with Council Bluffs St. Albert, Treynor and Des Moines Christian dropping a class. A top-10 isn’t enough for the small schools. I’m going farther.

Seven of my top 10 in 2A were neither state participants nor ranked in the final Associated Press poll last season, including No. 1 Monroe PCM.

Records might not all be perfect. I’m using the records from Quik Stats.

Who’s too high? Who’s too low? Please tell. I’m not an expert on this.

When did Lewis Central move up? They are still a 3A school in football. That is interesting. Also, are you aware that with the new substate assignments that Charles City and Forest City are in the same substate—will be hard for them to finish 2 and 3.

Ankeny should be recieving votes, if not in the top 10. They are an extremely young team, starting 3 sophs, 1 fresh, and 1 junior. But the young guys can play. They tied Waukee in the jamboree, who is ranked 9th. And over the summer they beat Southeast Polk, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, North Scott, Iowa City High, Des Moines Roosevelt, and Sioux City West.
