CEDAR RAPIDS — The two smallest schools provided the two best teams at the Cedar Rapids Xavier Invitational girls’ track meet.
Dubuque Wahlert and Benton Community, the only two Class 3A schools in the eight-team field, stood atop the team standings last night at Saints Field. Wahlert won it with 125 points; Benton was next with 97.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released its preseason soccer rankings, and Cedar Rapids Xavier and Cedar Rapids Kennedy find themselves in a familiar spot.
Defending champion Xavier is rated No. 1 in Class 1A. Xavier has the 47th highest enrollment in the state, but enough sharing agreements are in place to drop the Saints to No. 54. The top 48 teams are 2A in soccer, leaving the Saints as small-school favorites once again.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Dubuque Wahlert has owned the first two distance events at the Cedar Rapids Xavier Invitational girls’ track meet.
Lauren Rusch held off Linn-Mar’s Brooklyn Kascel to capture the 3,000-meter run, and the Golden Eagles breezed to the title in the 4×800 in 10:01.47, a fine time for this early in the season.

Sarah Eggena’s typical track and field season picks up the pace usually closer to the middle of May and the state championships.
Eggena’s efforts, though, have been far stronger this earlier in the season than in season’s past — something Charles City girls coach Darren Bohlen and the Comets like seeing at this stage of the season.

Williamsburg Senior shot putter Rachel Curry broke a 30 year old school record last week. Rachel threw 42′4″ to place second at the (all class) state indoor meet. The old school record was 42 feet.
