MARION — Apparently a good offense beats a good defense three out of three times. At least if you have the potent inside-outside attack of top-ranked Solon.
The Spartans built a big first-quarter lead and breezed past Dyersville Beckman in a 76-42 rout last night in a Class 2A boys’ basketball substate final. Solon’s one-two punch of Matt Morrison and Tucker Wentzien combined for 45 points, topping the total output from the Blazers in the third matchup between the schools this season.

“You can’t top what they did,” Don Bosco Coach Tom Kettman said after his Dons outlasted Nashua-Plainfield, 37-25, in the Class 1A championship dual of Saturday’s state dual wrestling tournament.
What this Don Bosco senior class did was win four traditional state team championships and four dual titles. Four-time individual gold medalist Bart Reiter gets most of the attention, but let’s give it up for the rest of those special 12th-graders, too.
They would be Jason Mangrich, Vance Ortner, Luke Breuer, …

Carly, a senior, was kind enough and open enough to speak about her family’s loss. And she was gracious enough to send me copy of the many poems and letters she has written in the past 3 1/2 years. All of the copy is as she wrote it.
