MARION — The Washington Demons came out at the start of their Class 3A district tournament game against the Marion Indians last night using a diamond-and-one defense.
It was no huge surprise. The problem was, the Demons chose to concentrate on the wrong “one.”
Washington put a man on Marion sophomore Kasey Semler and played zone against the other four Indians in the early going. Senior all-stater Amry Shelby was caught a little off guard.

Class & region: 4A Region 5
Time & site: 7 p.m., at Newton
Notable: The CIML and MVC are guaranteed three 4A state qualifiers apiece, so the winner of this game give its league the advantage in qualifiers. No. 7 West is seeking its first state berth in school history and is led by Emma Krieger-Kittle (15.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg). Kiara Bomben (12.9 ppg) paces No. 5 Ankeny. Three of the Hawkettes’ top five scorers are freshmen.
Prediction: Ankeny 41, Iowa City West 37.

It’s 13 minutes until gametime for the Class 2A regional final girls’ basketball game between between MFL MarMac and Cascade.
The gym seats about 1,500, and it’s nearly full.
West Delaware AD Bob Murphy (one of the best in the business, by the way), said a new gym is well under construction here. It will seat about 2,100 and will have a 94-foot court.

Was able to catch up with 2009 Cedar Rapids Kernels Manager Bill Mosiello via phone Monday afternoon. Seems like a very good guy, which continues the string of “good guy” managers the Kernels have had in recent seasons.

Notable: Top-rated MFL MarMac beat Turkey Valley for the third time this season to reach tonight’s game. The Bulldogs were state runners-up last year. Emily Blietz paces the Bulldogs at 16.3 points per game, Melissa Moon adds 11.7. Chanda Goedken, the lone senior on the Cascade roster, leads the team in scoring at 10.1 ppg. The Cougars allow 30.5 points per game.

The Bobcats qualified just one wrestler for last week’s state tournament, but in a rare feat earned a berth in tonight’s Class 3A regional duals. Western Dubuque faces No. 8 Cedar Rapids Prairie tonight at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the State Dual tournament Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
