DES MOINES — Cedar Rapids Prairie freshmen Zach Witte and
Peyton Wagner couldn’t contain their smiles after the first round of the Class 3A state wrestling tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena.
The duo accounted for two of three wins for the Hawks.
“The determination of both of them as freshmen down here was nice to see,” Prairie Coach Blake Williams said. “I hope it continues the rest of the week.”
Both put their opponents on their backs and posted five points in the final period to win.

Cedar Rapids Prairie’s season came to a close last night with a 40-35 loss to Burlington in a Class 4A girls’ basketball regional quarterfinal at Prairie.
The Hawks, who wrapped up the season with a 5-17 record, were led by Danni Wright with 12 points.
Stacia Dean led Burlington (9-13) with 17 points, and Dani Stauffer added 11. Burlington plays Saturday at Iowa City High.
ANAMOSA 31, CENTER POINT-URBANA 14 — Kayla Sanborn scored seven points and Paige Goetz added six points for Anamosa (16-6) in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal at Anamosa.

DES MOINES — Mark Reiland will not allow himself to get too excited about Iowa City West’s initial showing at the 2009 state wrestling tournament.
While winning eight of 10 first-round matches Wednesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena — picking up bonus points in all eight victories — deserves rave reviews, there is still plenty of work ahead.

DES MOINES — Belle Plaine Coach Bob Yilek would be one good salesmen. Listen to the pitch he sold his team and you’d understand why.
Yilek told his team the state tournament was just another tournament, and the Plainsmen bought it.
Belle Plaine won seven of eight first-round matches and are planted in third place after the opening day of the Class 1A state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.

MARION — It wasn’t a slow start for the Marion Indians.
Quite the contrary.
“We started out too fast,” said Morgan Paige. “We were amped up. We had to slow down, not force anything and let the game open up.”
Paige nailed a pair of 3-pointers late in the third quarter to ignite a 20-3 run, and No. 3 Marion pulled away to escape Maquoketa, 57-41, in a Class 3A regional quarterfinal girls’ basketball game last night at Marion High School.

Des Moines-As expected defending champ Waverly Shell Rock and Iowa City West got off to great starts at the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines. Both schools advanced 8 in the winner’s division.
WSR has an early32-31 lead over the Trojans.
West’s, two time defending champs Nick Moore and Derek St. John won by fall.
Everything winds up Saturday night with championships in 3 different
divisions.

Class 1A district tournament first-round games are tonight, and four area schools enter the postseason ranked in the AP top 10.
Second-ranked Keota (19-1) leads the field, followed by No. 4 Iowa Mennonite School (201), No. 5 East Buchanan (18-1) and No. 10 HLV (18-3). Keota and Iowa Mennonite each spent time atop the AP poll in a season that has produced its share of top-notch area Class 1A teams.
Iowa Mennonite stumbled just once, to Class 3A Keokuk, and won 20 games by an average …

Cedar Rapids-The Linn-Mar Lions sent a loud message to the rest of the state Tuesday night. They beat second ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy 79-48 on the Cougar’s home court. It was Kennedy’s first loss of the season.
Linn-Mar jumped to an early lead and never looked back. The Lions led 38-17 at halftime and rolled to the 31 point victory.
Zach Bohannon led the Lions with 25 points. …
