Class 1A top-ranked Springville opened its defense of a girls’ basketball state championship last night with a 68-29 romp past Central City in a regional game at Springville.
Four players scored in double figures for Springville, topped by Katie Eiben with 23 points.
Callie Kloubeck added 13 points, Carly Martin 12 and Sarah Davidson 10.
The Orioles (21-1) move on to play Lone Tree in another home game Tuesday.
Vanessa Fiechtner scored 10 points for Central City, which bowed out at 7-15.

Class 2A top-ranked Solon wrapped up a perfect regular season last night with an 80-48 victory over Waterloo Columbus in boys’ basketball at Solon.
The Spartans are 21-0 overall and 18-0 in the Wamac heading into tournament play next week. Cody Strang, Ben Weeks and Matt Morrison each scored 14 points for Solon.
Eric Knipp scored a team-high 13 points for Waterloo Columbus.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released its final rankings and its state line pairings this afternoon.
The four No. 1 teams (Linn-Mar, Ballard, MFL MarMac, Springville) each were top-ranked from wire to wire. Can’t imagine that’s ever happened before.
Here are the state quarterfinal pairings, assuming the top rated team from each region advances:

Students from Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Linn-Mar are teaming up to support local flood recovery.
The two student government groups are jointly selling unique ‘Catfight’ T-shirts for students from both schools to wear at Tuesday’s Mississippi Valley Conference boys’ basketball showdown at Kennedy.
Kennedy students will wear white shirts; Linn-Mar students will wear black T-shirts. Each shirt will have the same design. Both schools are selling the shirts for $10.

The buzz around town is certainly gaining momentum regarding Tuesday night’s basketball game between Class 4A c0-No 2.-ranked Linn-Mar (17-1)and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (18-0). The buzz is deafening despite the fact both teams have difficult tests Friday when Linn-Mar hosts Iowa City West and Kennedy goes across town to Cedar Rapids Washington.
With both schools doing so well this year, people’s minds have wandered back 25 years ago to 1984 when Linn-Mar and Kennedy were both highly ranked and they played memorable games at the (then) …

Students from Kennedy High School have teamed with their Linn-Mar peers to help support flood recovery in Cedar Rapids.
