Two unusual things stuck out to me yesterday while sifting through a ton of sectional results.
First at the Class 1A sectional at Fairbank hosted by Wapsie Valley, only three wrestlers were in the 125-pound bracket. Strangely, it ended up being one of a few weights with a wrestleback. Welter won a tough battle with Mulnix in the finals, ending with Welter riding out Mulnix in the double OT tiebreaker for the win. Mulnix, who had byes to the final, then defeated a Jesup wrestler in the wrestleback. What are …

Nathan Joens scored 18 points and Cedar Rapids Xavier defeated Grinnell, 64-39, last night in a nonconference boys’ basketball game at Xavier.
The Saints (6-11), who held Grinnell to nine second-half points, got 13 points from John Keller.
Darrin Chitwood led Grinnell (9-9) with 10 points.
C.R. KENNEDY 82, WEST DELAWARE 37 — Jake Hughes scored 19 points to lead class 4A third-ranked Cedar Rapids Kennedy in a home victory over West Delaware. Max Martino also scored in double figures for the Cougars (17-0) with 11 points.

The IHSAA won’t release its official Class 4A substate pairings until early next week, but here are the pairings according to records kept by My Back to the Door and MVC stats guru Denny Goettel. These seeds were determined by each teams’ points totals in the 11 games played in games 5 through 15 on their schedules. Each teams’ seed appears in parentheses:
