I was walking from my car to the front door at Kennedy, when out should appear but a group of four Kennedy boys’ swimmers, in green Speedos, sprinting in the parking lot and screaming about the cold, a trail of barefoot prints following them every step of the way.
It’s January, boys. It’s 15 above.
Reminded me of the Seinfeld “shrinkage” episode.

I will be live blogging the MVC finals. We’ll have real-time results and I can answer any questions that pop up and participate in general wrestling discussion. For family members not able to make the trip or fans stationed elsewhere it will a good chance to keep up with the MVC action. I’m hoping to be able to add updates from contributors from other area tournaments as well.
The live blog will be located at www.iowaprepsports.com

I’m covering the girl/boy basketball doubleheader tonight at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, where the Cougars host Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Girls’ tip is 5:30.
Both games are biggies in the Mississippi Valley Conference. Kennedy swept the J-Hawks in their first meeting at Jefferson.
It’s Hall of Fame night, with 10 new members inducted. Hopefully it will give me time to write the girls’ story before the boys’ game begins.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Advantage Shupp. For now, anyway.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s third-ranked Jason Shupp topped Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s No. 6 Casey DeHoedt in what could be the pair’s first of many matches in the final weeks of the season, and helped the Cougars hold off the J-Hawks for a 32-31 victory last night at Kennedy.
In the opening match, Shupp broke open a scoreless match with a second-period escape and takedown, adding a penalty point in the third for a 4-0 win.
“It was nice to take it to him,” said Shupp. “I really …

TROY MILLS — Successful is a drastic understatement when describing the seniors of North Linn’s wrestling team.
The numbers are astounding and outstanding during the group’s four years.
They have dominated Tri-Rivers Conference competition, boasting a 54-0 dual mark before last night’s quadrangular against North Cedar and conference foes Monticello and Springville. Those seniors have enjoyed an impressive 61-5 dual mark overall.
“They’ve set the standard for the last three years,” Lynx Coach Brad Bridgewater said. “To remain undefeated in the Tri-Rivers is a pretty big task.
“It’s a credit to them and the …

Iowa City West senior Derek St. John could become just the fifth four-time conference champion at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament Saturday at Linn-Mar. He would join Dubuque Hempstead’s Cliff Moore (1999), John Galloway Jr. (2002), who won two each at Waterloo East and Iowa City High, Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Iowa City West standout Mitch Mueller (2005) and West’s Nate Moore (2008).
“It makes you think to when they were wrestling and how good they were,” St. John said. “To be a part of that feels pretty good.”

Marion enters Saturday’s Wamac conference meet at Maquoketa with three legit title contenders. Austin Weisinger (125), Alex Conway (152) and Curtis Ette (160) have stood out for the Indians.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with how they’ve come along,” Marion Coach Bruce Weisinger said. “I’m certainly proud of what they’ve don so far, even the whole team has been a good group to work with.”
Conway and Ette have been strong, posting 25-1 and 17-2 records, respectively. Neither has lost since the finals of West Delaware’s Hawk Tournament on Dec. 6. Austin …
