Alburnett Coach Kane Thompson has two of the smallest big guns around. Thompson’s Pirates have a potent pair to start their lineup in freshman Tyler Shulista at 103 and 112-pound sophomore Christopher Halblom.
Currently, Shulista and Halblom have a combined record of 58-1 with 44 pins. Shulista is 31-1 with 25 pins. Halblom, who was the Class 2A 103-pound state runner-up last year for Center Point-Urbana, is 27-0 with 19 falls.
Halblom is ranked No. 1 and Shulista is ranked third by The Predicament.

OK, here’s a fun equation for a journalism major who should’ve gone into math:
Calculate the odds of the Linn-Mar girls starting 9-from-9 from 3-point range, as they did Tuesday against Dubuque Wahlert.
Of the first nine shots, Jaime Printy (a 40-percent 3-point shooter) made four of them. Kayla Klopfenstein (41.8 percent) made two. D.J. Norman (34.4 percent) made two. Rachel Kearney (33.3 percent … 1-for-3 all year) made one.
So the equation reads:
x = (.40 to 4th power) x (.418 squared) x .(344 squared) x (.333)
x = .0256 x .174 x .1183 …

Linn-Mar has wrapped up a share of the MVC Valley Division, while Sigourney has done likewise in the South Iowa Cedar League.
Linn-Mar (16-0 overall, 12-0 MVC), the top-ranked team in Class 4A all year, jumped all over Dubuque Wahlert in the first half, making its first nine 3-point attempts in a 68-39 rout. It was 42-13 at halftime. The Lions win the title outright with one win in their last four games (somehow, I think they’ll manage that) or a loss by Cedar Rapids Jefferson (10-5, 6-4).

MARION — The Linn-Mar Lions own a piece of the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division crown.
Complete coronation is inevitable.
Class 4A top-ranked Linn-Mar made the first nine 3-pointers it shot, stormed to a 29-point halftime lead and whipped 3A No. 11 Dubuque Wahlert, 68-39, in an MVC girls’ basketball game last night at Linn-Mar High School.
That’s right. The Lions (16-0 overall, 12-0 MVC) started 9 of 9 from long range.
Try that sometime. Good luck.
“We came out strong. Our shots were falling,” said Jaime Printy, who snapped out of …

Linn-Mar sophomore shines in final quarter
By Jeff Dahn

DUBUQUE — He looked a lot like his oldest brother, Jason, right down to the No. 23 on his black Linn-Mar jersey.
Welcome to the show, Matt Bohannon, one your older brothers Jason and Zach are former and current members of.
Sophomore Matt Bohannon scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, including an 8-for-8 showing from the free throw line, to help Class 4A third-ranked Linn-Mar escape 3A No. 7 Dubuque Wahlert, 66-61, in front of a capacity crowd last night …

Linn-Mar knocked off Dubuque Wahlert, 66-61, Tuesday night at Wahlert, with future D-I basketball players Zach Bohannon and Nate Hutcheson combining for 43 points and 19 rebounds for the Lions. It was a terrific game that wasn’t decided until the Lions but together a 14-6 f0urth quarter run, spurred by dead-eye free throw shooting from sophomore Matt Bohannon down the stretch.
There was another D-I signee on the floor in this game. That would be Wahlert’s 6-4 senior guard Eric May, who has signed on with Todd Lickliter and …

Through the years I’ve heard a lot about how difficult it is for opposing basketball teams to show up at Dubuque Wahlert and leave with a victory. There was an old joke about the Wahlert booster club inducting the game officials into their Hall of Fame at halftime of games. Stories of the antics of the student body seated behind one of the baskets are legendary.
This is my first visit to Wahlert – I’m at Tuesday’s game between Linn-Mar and the Golden Eagles – and at first glance, …
