Sights and sounds at Linn-Mar’s 50-31 win over Cedar Rapids Washington in girls’ basketball Thursday night at Washington:
Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jade Rogers was wearing a red Linn-Mar T-shirt. On the back was inscribed “Printy 24.” Rogers and Jaime Printy will be teammates at the University of Iowa in two years.
Former Washington player and University of Maryland coach Brenda Frese was in attendance (as was sister Marsha Frese). Brenda received a Washington blanket and T-shirts for her 11-month-old twins.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jason Shupp can be considered a complete package.
The 189-pound senior serves as a model for wrestlers and athletes, in general, demonstrating intelligence, work ethic, talent, leadership and even a little perseverance.
He’s molded all of those traits to put himself in perfect position to have his best wrestling season ever.

It’s been 16 years since the last lob pass from the guard court to the forward court. Most of the current girls’ basketball players were either in diapers or non-existent when the last six-on-six game was played.
 
From time to time, I hear cries for a return to the old game. Mostly they’re from older people that can’t stand to sit through a five-on-five game that ends up 31-26. I can’t completely blame them.

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Lewi Manirumva is the 2008-09 Gatorade Iowa Boys’ Cross Country Runner of the Year.
Manirumva placed fourth in Class 4A at the state meet and was Iowa’s top performer at 30th in the Midwest Regional.
A native of Burundi, Manirumva maintained a 3.73 grade point average.
