CEDAR RAPIDS — Laura Schmidt does not have to look far to find inspiration on the bowling lanes.
Right beside her is Cedar Rapids Prairie teammate Tiffany Williams — her varsity sidekick for three years. Those two juniors are separated by only three pins among the Mississippi Valley Conference’s elite bowlers.
Entering last Friday’s competition, Williams had an average of 194.8, compared to 191.8 for Schmidt.

Life in the Valley has been very good to the North Cedar Knights so far this season.
Not the Mississippi Valley Conference, the dominant big-school league that produced Class 4A and 3A state champions Iowa City High and Dubuque Wahlert last season. This is the first-year Cedar Valley Conference, formed after the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference dismantled, with four schools joining the Wamac and the other seven joining North Cedar in the new CVC.
North Cedar left the Big East Conference to help round out the eight-school CVC.

The Metro boys’ basketball scene is healthy, perhaps as healthy as ever. The two teams with the most wins and the highest rankings among the state’s big-school class over the past few seasons are Linn-Mar and Kennedy.
Interest is high. Sold-out gyms are assured anytime those two teams meet. Standing-room-only is the order, not the exception.
We could be talking right now, of course, with 10-0 Kennedy and 10-1 Linn-Mar holding down two of the top three spots in the most recent AP Class …

Which Gotto you ask? Well, Jimmy Gotto, the Bobcats’ Class 3A fourth-ranked 119-pounder. He earned his 100th victory with a first period fall over Postville’s Miguel Hernandez at the Wapsie Valley tournament on Saturday. Gotto is the school’s first to reach the milestone in his junior year and the school’s eighth to reach 100 wins. He is 103-13 His former teammate, Chris Gansen, his the school’s winningest wrestler with 138 victories.
