CEDAR RAPIDS — When Waverly-Shell Rock Coach Rick Caldwell speaks his wrestlers listen.
He won’t be mistaken for Charles Schwab, but his advice before the final round of J-Hawk Invitational paid dividends.
Waverly-Shell Rock blitzed the field late, winning all eight matches of the final round to capture the team title Saturday at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The Go-Hawks tallied 213 ½ points with seven champions, pulling away from the field after starting the finals in third place behind Fort Dodge and West Delaware.

Off the subject: I’ve gone to Ames each of the last two Saturdays for kids’ activities. One thing I’ve learned: U.S. Highway 30 between Cedar Rapids and Tama drives like a county road.
It needs serious work. Like, yesterday.
Anyway, this list includes about a dozen scores not published in today’s paper.

CEDAR RAPIDS — By all accounts, including last night’s, Mount Vernon has a pretty good boys’ basketball team.
Yet the Mustangs have been beaten decidedly twice this season by Highway 1 nemesis Solon, including 64-46 as part of Rivalry Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Center. Guess that tells you all you need to know about how powerful these Solon kids truly are.
“They’re just very, very good,” said Mount Vernon Coach Ed Timm. “They’re very deep, they’ve got a good inside-outside game. I thought we did the things we needed …

The Indians ran the floor with the greatest of ease, were deadly from behind the 3-point arc and outran Independence, 70-51, in a St. Luke’s Sports Medicine Rivalry Saturday Wamac Conference game last night at the U.S. Cellular Center.
A lot of teams come into the USCC and struggle shooting the ball against an unfamiliar background. But Marion …
