WELLMAN — Solon showed off its strength by clubbing Mid-Prairie on the road while two of its best players sat at the end of the bench in street clothes because of suspensions and a top reserve was at home recovering from an accident.

Tucker Wentzien’s double-double guided Solon to a 67-40 victory over Mid-Prairie in a boys basketball game last night at Wellman.Wentzien scored 26 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and blocked six shots for good measure in the non-conference game. Cody Strang added 18 points for the Class 2A third-ranked Spartans (5-0).
“Tucker Wentzien really played a great game and pretty much scored at will in the lane against us, and Solon did a great job of getting him the ball in scoring position,” said Mid-Prairie Coach Don Showalter.

Shailene Beard hit five second-half 3-pointers last night and led Cedar Rapids Washington to a 51-41 victory in girls’ basketball at Cedar Falls.Beard scored a game-high 17 points in the Mississippi Valley Conference game, and Camille Marie-Lidd added 12 points for the Warriors (6-1, 5-0).

MVC MISSISSIPPI DIVISION
The frontrunners: It’s cluttered at the front, with five teams within one game of the lead. Dubuque Wahlert (5-1, 3-1), Cedar Rapids Xavier (5-2, 3-1) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5-2, 4-2) are in a virtual tie for the lead.
Other contenders: Defending 4A state champion Iowa City High (6-2, 3-2) stands a half-game back with Iowa City West (4-2, 2-2) still firmly in the hunt.
